Canva is one of the most popular ways for self-published authors to design a book cover without hiring a designer. It works well for KDP paperbacks, as long as you start with the right dimensions. Most problems with Canva covers come from one mistake: designing at the wrong size, usually the front cover only, without the spine and bleed that KDP requires.
This step-by-step guide shows how to set up a KDP paperback cover in Canva using a free, correctly sized template. You will need your trim size, page count and paper type. With those, our free KDP Spine Width and Cover Size Calculator gives you the exact full cover size and a downloadable 300 DPI template image.
What KDP needs from your cover file
KDP’s cover guidelines set out the main requirements for a paperback cover:
- One PDF containing the back cover, spine and front cover as a single image.
- Bleed of 0.125 inches (3.2 mm) on the top, bottom and outside edges.
- At least 300 DPI resolution for images.
- Text at least 0.125 inches inside the trim lines on the front and back.
- Spine text only if the book has at least 79 pages.
- KDP recommends keeping the file to 40 MB or less, and files over 650 MB will not convert.
The full cover size is calculated as: bleed + back cover width + spine width + front cover width + bleed. The height is bleed + trim height + bleed. The spine width depends on your page count and paper type, which is why you need those numbers before you open Canva.
Step 1: Get your exact cover dimensions
Open the KDP Spine Width Calculator and enter:
- Your trim size (for example, 6 x 9 inches)
- Your final page count
- Your paper and ink type (white, cream, standard color or premium color)
It shows the spine width and the full cover size in inches, millimeters and pixels at 300 DPI. For example, a 6 x 9 inch paperback with 300 pages on white paper has a spine of about 0.676 inches, so the full cover is about 12.926 x 9.25 inches including bleed.
Download the template image from the calculator. It marks the bleed, trim lines, spine and safe areas so you can see exactly where text should go. If you have not settled on a trim size yet, read KDP trim sizes explained first, because changing it later means redesigning the cover.
Step 2: Create a custom-size design in Canva
- In Canva, choose Create a design, then Custom size.
- Switch the unit to inches.
- Enter the full cover width and height from the calculator, including bleed.
- Create the design.
Do not start from one of Canva’s generic “book cover” templates. Those are usually sized for an ebook front cover only, which is not the same shape as a print wrap cover.
Step 3: Add the template as a guide layer
Upload the template PNG you downloaded and place it on the canvas, stretched to fill the whole page exactly. This gives you visible guides for the spine and safe zones while you work.
Lower its transparency so you can see your design underneath, and lock it so it does not move. When the design is finished, you will delete or hide this layer before exporting. It is a guide, not part of the cover.
Step 4: Design within the safe areas
Remember the layout: the back cover is on the left, the spine is in the middle, and the front cover is on the right.
- Extend background colors and images all the way to the outer edge so the bleed is covered.
- Keep the title, author name, blurb and any important details inside the safe area, at least 0.125 inches inside the trim lines.
- On the spine, keep text inside the spine safe area. KDP’s guidelines ask for at least 0.0625 inches between spine text and the spine edge because printing can shift slightly.
- Leave space for the barcode on the back cover. If you do not provide a barcode, KDP places one on the back cover for you, so keep that area free of important text.
- Use images that are high resolution. A photo that looks fine on screen may be too small for print at 300 DPI.
For the full list of standard sizes and the measurements behind them, see our KDP paperback cover size guide.
Step 5: Remove the guide and export as a print PDF
- Delete or hide the template guide layer.
- Choose Share, then Download, and select PDF Print.
- If your Canva plan offers a CMYK color option, you can choose it. KDP asks for CMYK images and removes embedded color profiles automatically, so expect slight color differences between screen and print either way.
- Check that the downloaded PDF has the same dimensions you entered.
Canva also has options for print bleed and crop marks. Because your canvas already includes bleed in its size, you do not need Canva to add extra bleed. Crop marks are not needed for KDP.
Step 6: Upload and check the preview
In your KDP paperback setup, choose to upload a cover you already have and select your PDF. Then open the previewer and check:
- No text or important elements are cut off at the edges.
- The spine text is centered and fully within the spine.
- The barcode area does not cover anything important.
- There are no warnings about size or resolution.
Order a proof copy before you launch. Colors and spine alignment are much easier to judge on a printed book than on a screen.
Common Canva cover mistakes
- Designing only the front cover. KDP paperbacks need the full wrap: back, spine and front in one file.
- Using the wrong page count. If your page count changes after editing, your spine changes too. Recalculate before you upload.
- Switching paper type late. Cream paper is thicker than white, so the same book has a wider spine. Our guide to cream vs white paper on KDP shows the difference.
- Text too close to the edges. It might look fine on screen and get trimmed in print.
- Low-resolution images. Stretched or small images print blurry.
- Using elements you do not have the rights to. Check that fonts, photos and graphics are licensed for commercial use on a book cover.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a KDP paperback cover in Canva for free?
Yes. A free Canva account lets you create a custom-size design and download a PDF. Some features, such as certain export options and premium elements, require a paid plan.
What size should my Canva canvas be for a KDP cover?
It must be the full wrap size: back cover, spine and front cover plus 0.125 inches of bleed on each outside edge. The exact width depends on your trim size, page count and paper type.
Do I need to add a barcode in Canva?
No. If you do not include a barcode, KDP places one on the back cover. Just keep that area clear of important text and images.
Why does my cover look different in print?
Screens display color differently from print, and KDP removes embedded color profiles. Ordering a proof copy is the best way to check colors before launch.
