How to write an author bio that works
Your author bio is often the second thing a reader looks at after your cover. A good one makes readers trust you, tells them what kind of books you write, and gives them a reason to remember you. Here is what to put in:
- Lead with your genre. Say what you write in the first sentence so the right readers know they’re in the right place.
- Add one credential, if you have one. An award, a bestseller list or relevant expertise builds trust fast. If you’re a debut author, say that. It’s a real selling point.
- Show a little personality. One human detail, like where you live, your pets or an unusual hobby, makes you more memorable than a list of achievements.
- End with a next step. Your website, newsletter or social handle tells interested readers where to go.
Which bio length should I use?
| Length | Words | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Social | Under 160 characters | Instagram, TikTok, X and Threads profiles |
| Short | 40–60 | Back covers, guest posts, conference programs |
| Medium | 90–130 | Amazon Author Central, Goodreads, book inside pages |
| Long | 150–250 | Your website’s About page, press kits, media pitches |
First person or third person?
Third person (“Jane Holloway writes…”) is the standard for back covers, Amazon and press kits. It reads as professional and lets hosts and journalists copy your bio as it is. First person (“I write…”) feels more personal and works well on your own website, in newsletters and on social media. Many authors keep one of each.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Listing every job you’ve ever had. Only include background that connects to your books.
- Exaggerating credentials. “Bestselling” should mean you really did hit a list.
- Letting it go stale. Update your bio every time you release a new book.
- Using the same length everywhere. A 250-word bio on a back cover crowds out the blurb.
Frequently asked questions
Is this author bio generator free?
Yes, it’s completely free with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser, so none of the details you type are stored or sent anywhere.
Can I edit the generated bio?
Yes, and you should. The generator gives you a polished first draft. Change the wording until it sounds like you, and click “New variation” to see different phrasings.
What should I write if I have no awards or credentials?
Leave those fields blank. The bio will focus on your genre, what your books are about and a personal detail, which is exactly what readers care about most. Being a debut author is a credential in itself.
Where do I add my bio on Amazon?
Sign in to Amazon Author Central, open your author profile and paste your medium-length bio into the biography section. It then appears on your author page and on your book pages.
What else goes in an author press kit?
A press kit, or media kit, usually has your bio, headshot, book sheets with cover, blurb and buying links, sample interview questions and your contact details. The Author Media Kit template has all of these pages pre-written for you.
